‘Fifty O'Clock’ consists of a sequence of short prose-poems, written in 2004 when the poet turned 50 the age at which his mother died thirty years before. Dennis O'Driscoll is a well-known and well-published contemporary Irish poet and poetry critic.

‘Distracted a while, I imagine my entire life still stacked
in front of me like cash: as if some outrageous mistake
had been made in calculating my age and I could
bring back my birth cert like a receipt,
 insisting on a refund.’
